The explosiony fire and subsequent oil spill from the well being drilled for BP by Transocean in the Gulf of Mexico is proving to be a very expensive problem for the international oil major {see 'The Month in Brief). The ramifications of the disaster go well beyond BP, however. They have already led to a moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and could slow down or even prevent exploration in other offshore areas across the world.
