Iran: National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) has reported that oil extraction from the South Pars gas field will begin in March 2016. The field, discovered by NIOC in 1990, covers an area of 9,700 km~2 (6,027 mi~2), of which 3,700 km~2 (2,299 mi~2) are in Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and the remaining 6,000 km~2 (3,728 mi~2) situated in Qatar's territorial waters.
