Tertiary EOR Method for Salym Group of Fields

Salym Petroleum, a joint venture of Shell and Gazprom Neft, is addressing a huge challenge of enhancing oil production from its fields in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District which are already in the third phase of depletion characterized by rapidly declining output rates. Seeking to slow down the decline Salym Petroleum is performing a pilot project to test a tertiary oil recovery enhancement method known as ASP-the injection of a special alkaline surfactant polymer solution. Preliminary work has been in progress for several years, the design phase and construction phases have been completed for a portion of the facilities. In late February, equipment was delivered to the Salym group of fields for the construction of a mixing unit to make a solution used to considerably improve oil recovery rates. The plan is to put the facility into service by the mid-201 5 and produce incremental oil in 2016. After 2020, provided it gets tax benefits, the company will be ready to commercialize the method, which is expected to produce a 30-percent increment in oil output.
