According to the Montana Board of Oil and Gas, there were 4,316 oil wells in Montana producing nearly L00,000 barrels per day, and 34.8 million barrels of crude for the year 2007. This output made the state the 10th-largest producer of crude in the U.S.The primary play is still the Williston Basin, which produces the majority of the state's oil. That same year, Montana also produced 95.4 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas, with more than 6,400 producing gas wells, the majority in northern Montana.
