Conoco was one of the first U.S. majors to enter Russia a decade ago, seeking opportunities as that country opened to the West. Since it began operating Ardalin Field in 1994, through a joint-venture called Polar Lights Co., it has produced more than 80 million barrels of oil. This is the first U.S.-Russian joint venture to develop a new oil field, and it remains a model for a successful Western effort.
