Oil and gas companies need fuel to drill wells, acquire assets and ultimately, drive across the finish line to payout. That fuel is capital. Today, with the advent of expensive horizontal wells being drilled over vast acreage in the resource plays, the need for high-powered fuel is probably greater than ever before in the oil and gas industry's history. Fortunately, the providers of private equity have become more numerous, more structured and more sophisticated over the past 30 years—and the amount of capital they have to deploy is, by all accounts, substantial.
