Theoretical and experimental research performed at the Institute of Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Science (RAS) showed that the key to solving a wide range of problems related to drilling and operation of oil and gas wells is a geo-mechanical approach to determine the stresses of the formation and their effects on the deformation and destruction of rock.
