Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is one of the most contagious animal diseases and can cause significant economic losses. As it is a transboundary disease, exacerbated by rapid growth in international trade in animal and animal products, FMD is one ofthe major diseases affecting production and international trade in food of animal origin. In developing countries it also undermines food security and economic development, both at the level of village smallholders and in the more organised production chains supplying urban and export markets.
