Five years of rapid expansion in western Canada's resource play-driven conventional oil and gas industry came to a screeching halt in 2015 as crashing oil prices and stalled natural gas prices forced both operators and service companies to slam on the brakes. Exploration and development spending in conventional oil andgasand resource plays more than doubled from around $18.6 billion in 2009 to a little under $43 billion in 2014, according to Canadian Association of Petroleum Producer statistics. In 2015, that number retreated to an estimated $21.8 billion, an almost 50 per cent decline. Drilling activity has followed suit with around 5,340 wells drilled in 2015, down from 11,183 in2014.
