Government decision to retain AER mandate gives industry a much-needed break. Oil and gas players felt a wisp of relief in late 2015 with news that a review of the Alberta Energy Regulator's mandate is off the table. The regulatory process has been easier to navigate in Alberta since 2013, when the provincial government combined the Energy Resources Conservation Board with the regulatory functions of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development to create a single regulator of energy development in Alberta.
