When a pill bug is poked, it rolls into a tight ball. Although the response of this crustacean is natural, the resulting pellet is perfectly shaped for people to flick and fling at will. Canada's oil and gas players must resist the temptation to roll up into tight balls while commodity prices are under pressure. And they're certainly under pressure. After four years of relative stability, oil prices have been sliced in half since the summer of 2014. As a consequence, the Conference Board of Canada announced in September that Alberta's economy had "shifted into reverse gear" after five years of cruising at high speed. The board expects Calgary and Edmonton to go from having the country's strongest economies to having among the nation's worst.
