Travellers in the Mojave Desert may notice three strange shining shapes in the distance. Are they a mirage? No, they're just part of the world's largest solar power project. Covering 3,500 acres of dry lake bed in southern California, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System has begun commercial operations. The $2.2-billion project has the capacity to produce 392 megawatts of electricity.
