FORT MCKAY DROPS DOVER OBJECTIONS

The Dover oilsands project will no longer face a legal challenge from its neighbours. Fort McKay First Nation has reached an agreement with Brion Energy Corporation over the 250,000-barrel-per-day steam assisted gravity drainage development. Last year, the community won the right to appeal the Alberta Energy Regulator's approval of the project. The main point of contention was Moose Lake, which community representatives have described as "integral to the cultural survival of the people of Fort McKay." Located just 1,200 metres from the Dover project, these reserve lands are used as a gathering and healing place. Fort McKay had asked for a 20-kilometre buffer zone to protect the area from industrial development.
