Researchers at North Carolina State University believe they have found the key to simpler, more inexpensive bio-fuel production. The process relies on liquid salts called protic ionic liquids (PILs), which are created by mixing an acetic acid, like vinegar, with a base amine. When biomass is added, the PILs dissolve the lignin that would otherwise prevent the processing of energy-rich cellulose.
