Top honours for Tesla

For the first time in Motor Trend's 64-year history, the magazine's car of the year award has gone to an electric vehicle. The judges were unanimous that the Tesla Model S is the year's top car, besting the likes of the Porsche Boxster and Lexus GS. Motor Trend was particularly impressed by the vehicle's energy consumption rates, which reached the equivalent of 118 miles per gallon on a 212-mile trip from the outskirts of Los Angeles to Las Vegas. By comparison, a 2013 Porsche Boxster driving on the highway can max out its fuel economy at 32 miles per gallon.
