West Coast LNG not a new concept

The idea of shipping natural gas to Asia—while popular at the moment due to market forces in North America—is not a new concept. And perhaps an example from.a failed project some 30 years ago can provide some lessons on how quickly market forces and other factors can impact proposals. During the 1980s, a plant was proposed to ship LNG to Japan. But on Jan. 28, 1986, the multibillion-dollar proposal to sell liquefied gas from Alberta and British Columbia to Japanese utility companies was cancelled after five years of on-again, off-again negotiations.
