HOW DO YOU FIND NEW WORKERS when people don't even know you exist? That's the dilemma facing the oil and gas service companies—a group described as both "a hidden part of the industry and its largest employer" by Cheryl Knight, executive director and chief executive officer of the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada (PHRCC). It's also why the PHRCC chose the service sector as the focus of its first-ever online career fair last October, despite pressure from its partners in the Alberta government to include oilsands employers in the mix. Knight believes the service sector has been overshadowed by the big oilsands employers for too long and needs its own chance to reach workers.
