A senior official with the foremost safety training organization in the Canadian oil and gas industry says most of the post-secondary training in the area is focused on "putting out the fires" rather than focusing on the root causes of accidents in the workplace. Roy McKnight, manager of industry initiatives for Calgary-based Enform—which collaborates with industry trade associations such as the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and the Petroleum Services Association of Canada and offers dozens of worker safety courses a year—says the emphasis appears to be on training people to get them out into the field as quickly as possible.
