When is heavy crude not heavy? When it flowswithoutdiluent. Typically, bitumen cannot flowth rough pipelines without the addition of diluent (the resulting blend is normally called dilbit). A new$100-million project from MEG Energy Corp. is hoping to change all of that. The heavy crude quality improvement project will put bitumen through a mild-intensity thermal conversion that will remove the need for diluent. Following seven years of development, the project is making the leap from the lab to the field with the help of $10 million in funding from the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation (CCEMC).
