The science of seeing underground continues to evolve as Calgary-based HiFi Engineering Inc. rolls out a technology for finding natural gas leaks in wellbores. HiFi's LeakSonar is the first application of fibre optic technology for downhole acoustic noise logging. Its unique fibre optic-distributed monitoring systems combine to create a dynamic picture of downhole well flow trends in real time, showing the direction of events.Ever since Alberta's Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) turned its attention to leaks, producers have redoubled their concern over casing vent flow and underground gas migration. Whether due to casing vent flow or migration, natural gas leaks are a common concern for producers, not least because the ERCB requires them to be monitored and, in some cases, reported.
