It might be one of the greatest ironies of oilsands technology development that what is becoming the most widely used extraction method in the sector isn't even used by the com-pany that invented it. Imperial Oil Limited patented steam assisted gravity drain-age (SAGD) production technology in 1982 after trying it at its prolific Cold Lake project site. Ironically, it didn't work.
