Many saw him as nothing more than a criminal. Others embraced him as nothing less than a folk hero. Few public figures in Alberta have provoked as much controversy and debate in the past two decades as Wiebo Ludwig. Years of battling the oilpatch-through means legal or otherwise-came to an end on April 9, when Ludwig died at the age of 70, following a battle with esophageal cancer.In a statement to the media announcing the death, Ludwig's son Joshua described his father as "not a man of small prayers." Indeed, Ludwig's prayers were so loud that the public could not help but sit up and take notice.
