摘要

Shell Canada Limited has been given the go-ahead for its $1.35-billion Quest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The company has received conditional approval from the Energy Resources Conservation Board for the project. As part of Shell's Scotford refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., the project will capture up to 1.2 megatonnes of CO2 annually— roughly 80 per cent of emissions from the facility. The carbon will be stored two kilometres below the surface in a geographical forma-tion known as the Basal Cambrian sands. An 80-kilometre pipeline will connect the refinery to the sequestration site located eight kilometres north of Thorhild, Alta. Construction will begin on the facility in the third quarter of this year, with work on the pipeline slated to start by the end of 2013. Operations are expected to come on stream in 2015.
