You've heard of hybrid cars. You may even drive one.Now research firm Pike Research predicts we'll see a jump in global sales of hybrid locomotives, to nearly 500 between now and 2020. While that represents a fraction of the 4,000 locomotives sold each year, it does show that even this transportation segment is going green.While the low-cost batteries used in hybrid locomotives will make their profitability attractive, Pike Research senior analyst Dave Hurst says their adoption will be driven in large part by their ability to reduce emissions by as much as 80 per cent.
