The lingering impact of the Exxon Valdez - and possible solution

Nearly 20,000 gallons of crude oil are still trapped in the beaches along Prince William Sound-22 years after the Exxon Valdez disaster. That's the assessment of a university engineer, who will visit Alaska this summer to explore ways to remediate the remaining oil. Michel Boufadel, chair of civil and environmental engineering in Temple University's College of Engineering, has been awarded a one-year, $1.5-million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to investigate technologies to enhance the oil's natural biodegredation.
