After a career spanning 25 years, most of it spent concentrating on international oil and gas reservoirs with geological complexity, David Winter made a surprising discovery. The kind of geological challenge he had long sought, in a career that took him from the North Sea in his native Britain to Indonesia, China, Australia, Yemen, and elsewhere, existed in the Canadian oilsands, a few hundred kilometres north of the head office of Calgary-based Excelsior Energy, the junior of which he is president and chief executive officer.
