Two new pilot projects could benefit the oilsands sector—one by reducing the cost of hydrogen needed for upgrading, and the other by removing the need for diluent. In mid-December, Western Hydrogen Ltd. officially opened its molten salt gasification pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. The process uses water and a carbonaceous feedstock—such as petroleum coke or asphalt—to produce hydrogen and compressed CO2, which can be sequestered or used in enhanced oil recovery.
