It is not the fault of the infamous Highway 63 that so many people are injured and killed on its blacktop each year—it is the fault of the drivers. That is the assertion and belief of many, including the Coalition for a Safer 63 & 881, an industry-led multi-stakeholder group established in 2009 to change driver behaviour. Today, the group is edging closer to this goal with the launch of new campaigns aimed at inward reflection and better decisions. From 2006 to 2010, highways 63 and 881 had a combined 3,339 accidents with 93 fatalities. That's roughly six accidents per kilometre of road, and one death every five kilometres, in just four years. And while data for the last three years is not readily available, the injuries and deaths have not slowed down.
