Pegasus Pipeline Spill Consent Decree

A recently issued Consent Decree resolves civil claims stemming from the 29 March 2013 oil spill from the Pegasus Pipeline in Mayflower, Arkansas (USA) (see OSIR, 4 April 2013 and subsequent issues). A neighborhood of homes was evacuated following the spill of approximately 210,001 gallons (5,000 barrels) of Canadian tar sands crude oil. Oil flowed info Lake Conway, the largest manmade lake in the United States. Now a collection of water utilities and state and local agencies are urging the US Department of Justice and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to withdraw or renegotiate the Consent Decree, claiming it does not protect the public and is "not fair, reasonable, or in the public interest."
