Four Nigerian farmers, backed by environmental group Friends of the Earth, have taken Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) to a Dutch civil court over issues of widespread oil pollution and contamination of farmland and fishing grounds dating back to 2005 in the Ogoni region, in Nigeria's Rivers State. The farmers claim that their livelihoods have been destroyed. The Nigerians are seeking clean up, prevention against future damage, and compensation.
