Several Spills Reported in Hurricane Ike's Wake

The US Coast Guard (USCG), the Texas (USA) General Land Office, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality are responding to over 200 reports of pollution in the wake of Hurricane Ike, which came ashore along the coast of Texas (USA) as a Category 2 hurricane on Saturday, 13 September 2008 (see OSIR, 18 September 2008). The agencies have identified 156 sites with reported pollution in the Houston-Galveston (Texas) area, and 46 sites in the Port Arthur, Texas, to Lake Charles, Louisiana (USA) area. Fortunately, none of the reports seem to indicate a major spill. A USCG spokesperson said that the largest spill is about 3,000 barrels (126,000 gallons) and the responsible facility has moved quickly to get the problem under control.
