A sunken Nazi submarine (U-boat) resting in 140 meters of water off the coast of Norway poses a major environmental threat because of the cargo it carried,70 tons of mercury. The U-864 was en route to Japan,Germany's ally, carrying plans and parts for the production of aircraft, submarines, and radar,as well as 1,857 flasks of mercury to be used for weapons production, when it was torpedoed on 9 February 1945 by the British submarine HMS Venture.Britain was aware of the U-864's mission because some of the Japanese and German codes had been cracked.
