Latvia is in the oil spill news this week for a second time due to a pipeline break in neighboring Belarus. The break occurred on Friday,23 March 2007,on a section of pipeline leading to the Latvian port city of(you guessed it)Ventspils. The rupture occurred in the northern Belarus region of Vitebsk on a pipeline owned by the Russian company Zapad-Transneftprodukt.More than 100 metric tons(Mt)(over 29,000 gallons)of diesel spilled over a 1.2-hectare area and an unknown quantity entered the Ulla River,a tributary of the Daugava River.
