New natural gas flow measuring ultrasonic sensors have been developed with SMART metering. These piezoceramic designs "enable process managers and original equipment manufacturers to increase reliability and accuracy of their systems," notes the maker. The new 20-mm-diameter sensors have no moving parts so they are not subject to wear and are reportedly more reliable than alternative methods. They function by calculating gas flow as a measurement of time-of-flight of sound wave through the fluid.
