Report Details Sources of Marine Oil Pollution

The United Nations Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Pollution (GESAMP)presented their report on sources of marine oil pollution at the October 2006 meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC)of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).The report,titled Estimates of Oil Entering the Marine Environment from Sea-Based Activities (Report No.75),found that 45% of the oil that enters the oceans each year from ships is due to operational discharges.In contrast,accidents,which garner much more publicity,are responsible for only 36% of oil pollution from ships.
