Train Derailment Oil Spill Cleanup Underway

Numerous response teams are still actively engaged in firefighting, investigating, cleaning up spilled oil, and recovering and identifying bodies in the small resort town of Lac-Megantic (Quebec, Canada) where a train carrying crude oil jumped the track and crashed in a massive fireball in the heart of town on 6 July 2013 (see OSIR, 11 July 2013). The death toll has risen to 47. Firefighters are still combating flare-ups and hot spots. Oil spilled into Lake Megantic and flowed into the Chaudiere River. The area remains closed to the public.
