The oil spill off Guimaras Island in the Philippines continues to generate news.Up to 300,000 gallons of fuel oil are now estimated to have leaked from the MT Solar 1,which sank in rough seas on 11 August 2006.The vessel,chartered by the country's largest oil company,Petron Corporation,was carrying around 14,000 barrels(over 500,000 gallons)of fuel oil to a power plant;the remainder of the oil remains in the sunken vessel(see OSIR,17 August 2006).Last week,government officials decided to siphon the remaining oil out of the tanker,rather than attempting to raise the ship.
