摘要

The Ministry for Natural Resources and the Fauna of Quebec embarked on a major ecological classification of the territory in 1986. The programme is based on small-scale physical mapping, a systematic ecological inventory and classification of the vegetation according to phytoecological principles. Special attention has been paid to properly explaining the plant dynamics considering the environments and climate gradients involved. This has served to develop a hierarchical system of ecological classification for the territory and to map the ecosystems on various perceptive scales, ranging from the local to the continental perspective. Vegetation releves are also analysed on a more phytosociological basis to create plant associations and subassociations for Quebec under the Canadian National Vegetation Classification (CNVC). Currently, productivity studies are enhancing ecosystem knowledge and providing input for land use planning decisions. Guides for recognizing ecological types have been published to help forest managers and land planners to recognize forest sites. Additionally, knowledge about forest dynamics, planning constraints and forest productivity in various locations are used to identity the most productive and the most vulnerable sites and to establish zoning schemes. This work and research foster the use of ecological knowledge for sustainable forest and land use planning.
