The wetland observatory of the Southern Moselle area - usefulness of this tool for forest management.

Various functionalities can be expected from wetlands whose ecological and hydrological conservation status is good, particularly in the case of forested wetlands. However, total wetland area diminished by 25% between 1940 and 1990. The main threats it faces often arise from poor knowledge about the structure of these ecosystems. The "observatoire des zones humides" (Wetland observation project, in the South of Moselle departement, France) combines a database and a GIS to produce a cartography and description of wetlands and to monitor developments. After a few months using this tool, the data collected produces an overall view of the heritage-based conservation status of the ecosystems within the study area. This has helped to highlight dangers arising from spruce plantations and agropastoralism. Under the project, detailed data as to the description and changes in all the wetlands in the area under study will be made available to the general public (via the "core national" database). Some appropriate management guidelines will also be offered.
