To meet the need for evaluating the conservation status of habitats by 2012 pursuant to the Habitats directive, the CBNFC began a programme to enhance knowledge and assessment of habitats in 2008. The aim of this programme is to gather quantitative data that can be used for habitat assessment (surface area, distribution, floristic typicality, damage, practises) for the under-investigated parts of the region. A quick estimation tool for habitat surface areas was developed for this purpose. This is a hybrid method that uses predictive bases to carry out semi-purposive field samplings and obtain extrapolated estimates of surface areas. The article describes the method and the context in which it is applied.
