We examine potentialities of the rich-lean combustion process being used in the gas turbine engine combustion chambers to reduce the nitric oxide emission level. We carried out a number of gasodynamic calculations of the combustion chamber taking into account the combustion process at different values of the excess coefficient α in the primary zone. In accordance with the calculation results the α variation within the range from 0.5 to 0.6 has no great influence on the nitric oxide emission level. The analysis performed showed that mixing in the zone of basic holes of the combustion chamber is rather efficient and nitric oxide is mainly formed in its primary zone. The nitric oxide emission level can be reduced by using the convective system of cooling the flame tube wall in the zone of rich combustion.
