The actions of Uzbekistan's authorities with respect to the Zarafshan-Newmont joint venture, which produces gold in Uzbekistan, could result in the departure of Newmont Mining, the world's second biggest gold producer which owns half of the joint venture, from the country, Richard Boucher, the U.S. assistant secretary of state, said in Tashkent on August 10. Boucher said that Newmont Mining faced major problems doing business in Uzbekistan.
