'For me, raku is a state of mind,' says Rick Hirsch in the preface to this work on him by Scott Meyer, Professor of Ceramics at the University of Montebello in Alabama. Known for taking cultural traditions and giving them his own particular twist, today Hirsch is Professor at the School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He also remains a ceramic artist, his vessel abstractions reflecting the belief that the container form is a 'potent emblem of human culture'.
