This is an attractive recipe book, smallish in format with a big-ring binder and stiff, glossy pages that stay open. It is ready to sit in a small space on the workbench and be used for glaze experimentation, especially if the bench is next to a well-stocked minerals cupboard. The pages of all-colour test tiles show a wide range of tempting possibilities, though the discerning may compute that a number of the recipes are simple variations on colourings for a basic mix. Nevertheless, if you planned to work through the book, access to a college store would be a useful start, rather that making a long shopping list.There is an introduction to materials and techniques, tools, equipment and safety rules. These are concise rather than comprehensive. The recipes and tiles were supplied by a number of potters and are presented under headings; Earthenware, Stoneware and Porcelain in oxidised and reduced versions. This provides an attractive survey. It would have provided a good opportunity to explain the ceramic chemistry behind the colour groupings but this is not the main aim of this book.
