ROSSTAT CONFIRMS RUSSIAN INDUSTRY PLUMMETED 10.3 percent IN DEC

The Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) on January 23 confirmed that Russian industrial output plummeted 10.3 percent year-on-year in December 2008, although it grew 2.1 percent in the year as a whole. Output fell 8.7 percent year-on-year in November but edged up 0.6 percent in October. It fell 6.1 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter after growing 4.7 percent in Q3, 5.5 percent in Q2 and 6.2 percent in Q1. Industry grew 6.3 percent in the whole of 2007. Last year's growth was the lowest since 1998, when industrial output actually fell.
