United Company RUSAL (UC RUSAL) increased aluminum production 9.4 percent year-on-year to 1.096 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2008, the company said in a press release. Alumina production rose 3.5 percent to 2.837 million tonnes. Investment in the first quarter amounted to 457 million dollars, of which 235 million dollars for expansion, reconstruction, modernization and technical reequipment of existing capacity. The 9.4 percent increase in aluminum production was the result of bringing the Khakassia Aluminum Smelter up to design capacity of 300,000 tonnes a year and the launch in February of the Alscon smelter in Nigeria and a fifth electrolyte series at the Irkutsk smelter, as well as continuing efforts under programs to modernize company smelters and increase efficiency.
