The internet as a system integration tool

The need for remote access to information is being felt in many fields, leading many users to consider the use of the Internet. However, the Internet as it stands is not suitable for accessing production data in real time. An economic solution is needed to the problem of accessing data from sensors and actuators on a factory network over the Internet. One solution is to set up a single data warehouse, and such a data warehouse using the neutral STEP format has been adopted in the European NOAH research project. The UML language has been used in order to take account of the timing constraints applicable to interactions between objects.
