UMTS satellite segment

摘要

The future UMTS mobile telecommunications standard will include both satellite and terrestrial segments. The aim of the space segment standard is to make possible a dual-mode terminal using the same network protocol for terrestrial and satellitesegments. The some real time and store and forward services will be offered by both the satellite and terrestrial segments at data rates of up to 144 kbits/s. The standard is being developed jointly by ETSI in Europe and the ITU taking a globalperspective. The UMTS satellite segment may be on entirely new design or it may be based on existing satellite systems such as Globalstar, Iridium or ICO.
