Future applications of mobile telephony will demand improved bandwidth and infrastructure to provide the required quality of service. These requirements also apply to the radio interface. GPRS is a natural staging post between GSM and UMTS. Ifboth GSM/GPRS and GPRS/UMTS interfaces are available, continuity of service may be guaranteed by the use of multi-mode terminals. It is often possible to make use of existing investment in infrastructure. The various mobile telephony standards in usethroughout the world are gradually evolving towards a common radio interface solution in order to achieve compatibility between different mobile telephony networks.
