Measurements for research and industry-fundamentals, and interaction with instrumentation and metrology

Measurement is at the interface between many fields of knowledge and is present in all the human activities. Facing the problems in the field of instrumentation, one can take benefit by going back to the fundamental concepts of the measurement.The practical interest of these fundamental aspects remains difficult to establish in a rigorous manner, it is however possible to use them for defining and classifying the different kinds of measure ". This paper consists in a mini-review of thesefundamental aspects, the definitions and the role of the measure in the scientific research and in industry. This review leads to comments concerning the interactions between measure, instrumentation and metrology. It appears now necessary for everyone to adopt a new approach concerning the design of specific measurement methods or instruments. Having in mind the fundamental concepts can help to solve new problems.
